how do you connect 2 computers together?

I want to connect my laptop to my desktop so I can transfer some files from my desktop, to my laptop. How do I do it? both of my compuers are sharing the same cable modem, and taht is all I can do.

I have a CAT 5 cable, a hub, and a network card for my desktop.

Now what? any more wires I would need?? anything I need to set up?

You need the same for your laptop (network card + cable)

Connect both to the hub

Make sure both have IP addresses (192.168.5.2 & 192.168.5.3 for example)

Make sure File and print sharing are on.

Turning on NETBEUI can be helpful as well.

Its easier to use a crossover cable and run it straight from your laptop network card to your pc network card then simply enable internet conenction, file and printer sharing found somewhere in the menus in the control panel.
