how do you configure Ventrilo?

I am having some trouble with Ventrilo where speech is transmitted for a few seconds then gets cut off. So I can never really say anything substantial, have to keep it to quick short phrases. Any idea how to fix this?

I don't understand most the configuration options under ventrilo
