How do you clean your LCD Monitor?

What's the best way to do this? Is there an anti-static cleaner out there? I ask b/c I've got a $1700 monitor with a couple smudges on it I'd like to get off....but I'm not sure what the best way is to do this?

Suggestions?

A little bit of water, Radtech ScreensavRz, elbow grease. No chemical smell from so called special monitor cleaning solution, and it will make your LCD monitor look like brand new. Given of course, you don't do tracing w/ Xacto knife on the LCD screen.

um, windex is bad for the screen. ammonia destroys the anti-glare coating.

BS. I have been cleaning my LCDs (one lap top, and two stand alone) with windex on a paper towel for better than 7 years with NO change what so ever. I should mention that im VERY particular about display quality. All the damn crystals will be stuck before your anti-glare gets "shined up" with ammonia.

No BS. Here are just a few of the non-forum google links I found that all say windex is terrible for lcds...hate to burst your bubble:

Just because a few miscellaneous web sites say it does not mean its true. Spraying directly on the screen? Bad idea with anything. Cleaning your LCD 5 times a day? Bad idea. Cleaning occassionally (once every couple months) with windex, alcohol, water, or any mixture there of? Have at it. Experience always over rides common misconcenptions perpetuated via the web.

BTW, i didnt notice any links to actual LCD manufacturers web sites.

Easy there capain defense. But for your viewing pleasure, here you go, a manufacturer's link...in fact it's from Apple--the people who make the highest quality lcd's you can buy:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60446

"Dampen a clean, soft, lint-free cloth or paper with water only."

"You may also use a mild glass cleaner that contains no alcohol or ammonia."

uh....Windex contains ammonia.

Yet another manufacturer's site site that states that you should not clean your LCD with products that contain ammonia.

"NOTICE: Do not use any of the following chemicals or any solutions that contain them: Acetone, ethyl alcohol, toluene, ethyl acid, ammonia, or methyl chloride. If you have a different chemical or solution and are not sure whether it is suitable, do not use it. Using any of the chemicals in the previous list may cause permanent damage to the LCD or flat panel screen. Some commercial window cleaners contain ammonia and are therefore unacceptable."

So what? So you use anything but solvents...

Since they don't mention methanol in particular, my vote goes to:
Trader Joe's Trader Zen's Home E-Zen-tials NO-STREAK MULTI-PURPOSE CLEANER with essential oils of Cedarwood & Sage

"with essential oils of Cedarwood & Sage" ouch...oils on your monitor. That can't be good 🙂 But to each his own.

Finger prints? That's oil!

Come on now. Those particular essential oils evaporate quicker than I'd like. I oughta, I make soap and candles with my MDMA. 😛
