How Do You Check Your Computer's History (non-web browser)

i was wondering if anyone here knew of any way to check my computers' activity (not internet activity but more like what programs were opened, what emails were checked). the computer in question is my buddy's work computer and its a pentium d (dont know which model) running updated windows xp pro. we think someone (who isnt authorized to) is accessing and reading his emails. his computer has that standard windows password protection but he accidently left unlocked when he went home the other day. we arent allowed to install any programs so 3rd party software isnt an option.

any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

i wasnt quite sure which forum this belonged in so i stuck it in off topic. to the mods, if its in the incorrect forum please move it to the correct one.

Check if any unknown services are enabled on 'startup type' under event viewer. Check the registry editor under software for any 3rd party softwares!

Set event viewer to log as much as it can. It won't tell you who is using it if he left it unlocked, but it will tell you want was opened and when.

You will not be able to find out exactly what happened in the past, windows does not do that, but you will be able to log what happens in the future by running one of many logging programs.

thats for all the suggestions guys. i guess im SOL as for checking whats already happened. but i definitely will consider all the suggestions.
