How do you change the Serial Number on your HDD/Network card?

If there is a legitimate reason for doing that, you may want to explain that before you get flamed!

With a file maybe? As in the steel kind!

And I can just see it now... Stolen 10/100 NICs on Ebay, bids starting (and ending) at $.01!

Those operations are considered a bit shady if you really mean what you said. I can't think of a legitimate reason for doing so. Threads on such topics are considered verboten here. Either clarify your OP or post a legitimate reason or risk your thread being locked.

I doubt it's illegal to change serial numbers on your own equipment. It's the fraudulent activity that a person might be doing that needs to have the serials changed that is illegal.

Doing it to bypass PunkBuster probably isn't "go to jail illegal", at worst would be lawsuit illegal for violating the terms of use of the game, and they could claim some sort of harassment.

Punkbuster is an organization whose purpose is to prevent on line gamers from cheating - as if anyone really cares. I fail to see how the legitimacy of a HDD or network card's serial number has any bearing on cheating or not cheating.

What a waste of time and energy - when do you have time to earn your way in life?

What are you babbling about now?

Hardware serial numbers shouldn't be software-accessible. Then we wouldn't have this "tied to the hardware" crap.

I would think you would only need to change the NIC MAC, no? How would they have your HDD info?

And you can get NICs a dime a dozen.

One reason to need to do this is if you get motherboards that have the same MAC address, I've seen this happen before with BIOSTAR boards. Also, couldn't you spoof that on your router?
