How do you change the name of an Optical Drive in WinXP?

When I open Windows Explorer to view drives, folders, etc. it shows my DVD+-RW as a DVD-R drive. I know it's no big deal but I have two other computers with DVD burners installed and they come up DVD-RW by default. Can I manually change it? I went into properties but there is no option to rename for optical drives like there is for hard drives and USB devices.

Thanks in advance...

Try My Computer, right click on the external drive and then select RENAME.

No - for some reason that option does not appear in the optical drive menu. My system just calls it a CD Burner or DVD Burner w/o further specification.

I think the system reads it right from the drives embedded ID. Interesting!

OK - I just found out how to change it. It is in the Registry under Explorer, then drive letter, then Default Label. I found it using RegEdit and FIND "the current drive label." I then selected that label and modified it manually and now Explorer (and My Computer) shows the drive as "CD Burner QMS." I added the brand name.

Thanks corky-g and zodder but the drive is an internal drive set as master on the second ide port and there is no driver that I know of. I think I may have to do a registry hack, I'm just not sure where or how.

Thanks again...

See above -I edited after doing it. Yes, it is a Registry Mod. Find your Drive Letter as follows:

HKEY_LOCALMACHINE
Software
Microsoft
Windows
Current Version
Explorer
DriveIcons
Then look for the drive letter of your DVD burner, check the DEFAULT LABEL - then Mod it. :)

Sorry - that seems to only work for external drives. Can't find any labels for internals. But - they gotta be there somewhere.
