How do you change file association?

When you are presented with a 'open with' option message when attempting to view a file of unknown type and choose the wrong program to try, the next time you try to open the file windows will use the same wrong program. How do you unassociate the file from this wrong choice to try another? Thanks

The most customizable way to do it is by opening Folder Options applets, and choose the extension you want to change on the File Types tab.

Charles, How do I open Folder options applets. I was trying to look at system.dat and thought a text reader like wordpad might work but just got junk.

Open up any explorer window (where you view your files) Then go to the View menu on the top. Select "Folder Options..." Then select the File types tab. This allows you to setup which file extensions are associated with which programs. So find the .dat extension in the list and change the properties so that it is not associated with any programs. No next time you click on system.dat the window asking you which program you want to use to open it will pop up. Also in that window, there is a little check box which says "ALWAYS USE THIS PROGRAM TO OPEN FILES OF THIS TYPE" IF you uncheck it then the file extension will remain unassociated with any program you try, thus allowing you to try several programs without having to do the old folder options bit.

moonbeam, another way to do it would be to highlight the file, then hold down shift as you right click. this gives a menu that you can then choose to "open with" multiple times, quickly.
