How do you change a drive's name in Windows Explorer?

I wanted to change the name of my D: and E: optical drives to CD-RW and DVD-ROM, respectively. I right clicked the drives' properties but it won't allow me to change the default name. Any thoughts or suggestions on how I could accomplish this?

The label doesn't apply to the drive itself, it applies to the volume in the drive, meaning the disc. Each disc you insert has its own label; you can't name the drive.

If you view the contents of My Computer, it lists each drive type beside the drive letter.

I see. It would be cool though if future OSs let you change the default drive name. I actually have 3 optical drives and sometimes can't immediately remember which is which when I'm looking at them in Windows Explorer, particularly when there's a disc inside one and the volume label reads something like 'New'. :)
