How do you brake in ICE SKATING?!!

I skate well, but I don't know how to brake... I mean, I've been skating for 3-4 times now and I have learnt how to skate quite avidly, but I don't really know how to brake (I just usually go along the wall to slow myself down)... my cousins said that I should point my toes inward but that doesn't really happen to me, I just usually lose my balance!

Can anybody give me some advice on braking??

Thanks!

Use the T-technique.

Meaning have either your left foot or right foot straight, and the other perpendicular to it to form a T.

well, you break with the side of the blade... Just turn your body sideways and bend your knees.

Turn the blades perpendicular to your direction of movement and dig the edges in. Basically make a really sharp turn and then dig in. It's the same way you stop in downhill skiing.

I sometimes make a little jump in the air and come down braking hard.

Once you manage to do it once or twice it'll start happening naturally.

I think what you're referring to is called a "snowplow"

it took me quite a few more than just a few times skating to learn that move. the secret is to learn how to turn your skates sideways while moving without digging in the ice and throwing your weight forward.

just get some thick pants, kneepads and elbowpads and go to it, cause trust me, you'll spend some time on your ass :)

Its just like how you do it while skiing, or a carving while snowboarding, bend ur knees and point them one way

the cheap skates that you borrow usually have a jagged edge on the front, so you just make your two face down and you can break . with like hockey skates you just take one foot and make it perpendicular to the other one and drag the "blade" across the ice. you can probably move both feet perpendicular to your direction which i've seen some hockey types do, but it looks hard

Haha, snowplowing on ice skates. Pitiful!

Just do the t-stop. Like others have said keep your one skate straight and then put the other perpendicular behind it. Otherwise learn to stop like a real man and just make a really sharp turn.

Real men stop themselves by bodychecking another happless skater into the glass.

Hehe, I have played hockey just as long. It is easy for us, but not always for newbies. It is easier for them to do the t-stop, and then when they actually learn to skate they can stop properly.

When I try to stop quickly I usually end up braking with my head.

Absolutely love ice skating (and hockey, although I don't play), but it can be painful at times. ;)

The few times I've ice skated I've tried doing the T-stop while grinding the toe pick on the back foot. For hockey skates (I believe they lack the toe pick) they stop by turning both feet in front of them. This is much harder than it looks, but if executed correctly can spray a fine mist of ice into the eyes of an unsuspecting newbie (me).

I wouldn't recommend the snow plow method for stopping on anything more than like a really slow slow pace. For the hockey stop just kind of turn your hips more than a really sharp turn and try to dig your edges in. You have to be moving to do this of course. Just get good at falling, or borrow someone's hockey gear. I learned last year in full hockey gear, it makes it a heck of a lot easier if you don't care if you fall.

<< that T-method sucks, how are you gonna spray the goalie in the face doing that??? :) >>

Hehe... I have gotten into a few fights because I did that to an opposing goalie...lol

The T-stop doesn't work as well on ice skates as it does on blades... the lack of friction.
try the "power slide" which sprays up a ton of ice into the face of others.

I use the T-Stop, but that's with hockey skates. With Figure Skates, most people use the toe where it's has a jagged edge.
