How do YOU benchmark? *w/ poll*

Is there a "correct" way to set the driver control pannel for IQ? Is High Performance considered "cheating"?
Thanks,
Nick
I usually do the best quality available.

i wouldnt say its cheating, but i usually just leave them on the defaults. sometimes ill goto high performance to see if it makes a difference.

edit:

and for us ATI people it goes from:

optimal performance
high performance
balanced
high quality
optimal quality

I go for the best quality. My 6800 performs so well in all games, so why not? I notice the difference between optimized high performance and high quality, anyway.

All of the top of the ORB are high performance, its pretty much standard to set it to high performance (as sad as that is)

thats what i figured, so ill use HP from now on for benchies, BQ for games 😉

High Performance for benching..heheh benching my powerful 8500.

But in games, even on bootup screen for Doom 3, everything is so blurry it's almost impossible to read text. So I switch everything to High detail including MipMaps - Yes that's at 640x480.

I bench only with High Perf. Cuz pretty much everyone does. The reason I bench is too compare to make sure I have things set up right.

I play only with HQ.

When I usta run the 3dmark 01,03, 05 I would set to HP because thats how everyone else does it so I could compare apples to apples. But games and such I have it on Quality or whatever I ussually run the game at when I play it.

Hey Hyperlite,

I don't know why Thugs does it that way. But yeah, it makes a significant difference in Bench scores. Example, you'll see peeps posting something like: my score in so-n-so benchie is only "x", why is everybody else's score with the same card so high? Usual response is turn off AA & AF etc (pretty much same thing as selecting HP over HQ).

THugs, why do you suggest using HQ for benching? does it even make any difference?
as lomg as youre conparing apples to apples it doesnt matter.
i play in HQ, i bench in HQ.
i play in 1280res, i bench in 1280 res. (where possible)

why would i bother todo anything other then that?

im mostly talking senthetic benches, 3dmark, n-bench, aquamark etc. if you dont bench with the default settings there is no point really in even benching because you cant compare your results to everyone elses. everyone uses 10x7 no aa no af (default) with 3dmark, if u used otherwise then....
im confusing myself, hopefully you can see my point 😕
Nick

I see both of your points, I think using something like 3dmark 03, or 05 should be done at 1024x768. If I benching something I play,ie. Doom3, like to do it at the settings I play with

3dmark is synthetic so of course its meant to be run at certain default settings.
but doom3 is a game, and for games you should bench'em like you play 'em.
