Do you have to know someone who's an Admin and they can recommend you or is it some underground society where you get some emblem burned into your upper thigh?

And do they get paid?

The Elite Members are the key; they're actually part of a small committee of super-users within their respective sub-forum that helps decide the direction of it, including what kind of people would make good administrators/moderators.
