How do you be professional but not serious at the workplace?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm frequently have this inner conflict at work that drives me fucking nuts.

It might just be that I have a perverse sense of humor/sarcastic so it makes it difficult for me to joke around while staying professional. But at the same time, it's hard to work with people when you're serious all the time.

As long as you avoid the "hostile workplace" type comments just try stuff out. Use we and I to deflect your comments back at yourself. If you get stony silence you know where the limit is. Oh, and never, ever use perverse sarcasm with clients present, ever.

Edit: I'm almost as sarcastic at work as I am here. Know your audience.

i work graves... most people who work graves have a sick sense of humor... so you get along with everyone quite well.

plus.. its easier to say shit when management isn't around.

Ok for example, here's a case where I held back.

So I do genotyping in a lab, and one of the more experienced lab workers was giving me tips on how not to get DNA all over the place. I was so tempted to say that's what he said(not she said since girls don't get DNA all over the place ;)).
Was I wise in holding back?

i am 100 % professional until I understand the humor of my co-workers, then...when they least expect it.... I rain upon them the fury of my disgusting shock humor and leave them WTFPWND
