How do you backup without sync software?

I backup my data to an external hard drive using sync software called ViceVersa Pro, although I may start using Robocopy instead. However I know a lot of people don't use either of these programs. How can you efficiently backup without using something like these pieces of software? I just don't see any other way to do it.

As a side note, because sync software is so useful, it's definitely something that should be natively built into Vista.

I started out just doing my backups to an external HD or USB drive manually, but dropped that real quick after discovering Robocopy. Now, I no longer use RC, and have replaced it with SyncBack or Synctoy.

While Robocopy is useful, I don't see the advantages to using it over a dedicated sync program. Why are you switching?

I have no problems with VVP at all, however Robocopy seemed to do everything I needed it to do once I set up a nice batch file to run it. So it seemed simpler to just do that. However, come to think of it, just playing around with small stuff RC seems fine, but when I start doing much bigger syncs at home, I'll probably appreciate the user interface and progress bar VVP provides. So you're right, I probably won't switch.

Still, though, interested in hearing what others do.

I usualy use Synctoy. It needs some work though, like being able to select multiple files to copy so you don't have to check them off one by one if you only want to copy specific files.

You don't notice it when you are dealing with a few files, but I use it for copying several GB of user files around and it gets a little cumbersome.

Say, if you want to copy just the new files and not do overwrites and there are 50+ new files you want to copy you have to either deselect the other files (one by one), or toggle and then select the new files (one by one)... not fun.

Also, it does not copy .jpg's or other types of image files (unless I am missing something).

I like syncback.

i'd imagine vista would have "backup" or something natively just like xp. i just like syncback better and i won't be on vista for a while yet.

There is an option called "Sync Center" in Vista.

I am trying to figure out how to use it though. I can't seem to add jobs. *scratches head*

It looks like it is for offline files only.

Synctoy looks nice, and VVP is great. RC is good if you don't need a GUI.

So it seems as if most people use this software to backup like I do?

I just set up SyncToy last night to sync the "My Documents" folder to my backup server. Works great so far. I have it scheduled now to run weekly. Should cover all my basic needs.

I dont use a HD, I use my dual-layer DVD burner. I make backups every six months, because thats about all the security I need.
