How do you backup an Android phone?

Is there a way to "take an image" of an Android phone? I'm using the Samsung Captivate. I'd like to back up my phone , ideally with all the apps and data, and settings, before installing Froyo.

It'd be best if there were a way to do this the way you can image a PC's hard drive.

Not sure if you can do it like a hard drive?
My contacts are on Gmail
For apps, I use appbrain.com
For the phone, I use Titanium Backup and ROM Manager

first off: Search. There is a pretty detailed thread already.

And you are looking for Nandroid backup. Its included in all custom recoveries.

Root.
Install Rom Manager
Use Rom Manager to make backup. It will make Nandroid backup image.

Have fun with Froyo. Supposedly that leaked Froyo for Captivate also fixes GPS and adds Mobile AP.
