the worst thing that could happen would be that your hard drive crashes and you lose all your photos. so how do YOU keep them safe?

im planning on backing them up onto a CD, two copies of it. how would you do it?

Same, burn the CD twice.

Still don't know how effective that'll be down the road. So you have a backup copy, but if CD1 failed after 10 years what's to say CD2 didn't too? That's the biggest downside to digital photography as I already expressed in another thread. Not like film is going to survive a house fire any better, but short of that or storage techniques that would kill CDRs just as fast or faster, you'll still be able to make prints (not original quality) off film for your lifetime.

My main photo directory is on my D: drive...and i have the backup directory on the c: drive. So if one fails i have the other. I also burn two cd's every few months or so.

I keep one copy on my X-Drive, then the pics are copied over onto a raid-1 partition.

Burn them to DVD, put them in a vaccum sealed bag, in a padded envelope, inside a safety deposit box, inside a bullet proof safe, inside an armored truck, inside a salt mine, right below a military base armed with nuclear warheads.

Here is what I do:

I have two hard drives in my system, one is for my OS, APPS, email and my documents, money files, etc.
I run a daily backup of my files over to the second identical harddrive. This allows me a quick and painless recovery if my primary drive ever dies.

Now if the second drive dies, thats ok to, because my data is still on my original good drive.

I also take my photos and burn them to a DVD-R for long term storage. The disc is left open right now, 4.3GB is allot of images so it takes awhile to get it filled up all the way.

I will probably make a copy of the disc once I finalize it and get ready to start a new one. I have photos from years ago on there when i got my first 1-megapixel camera.
Now that my Canon G5 takes much larger photos, I imagine the disc will fill up allot quicker.
