How do you all feel about Carmax?

now that i'm slamming the garage with posts since i'm in the market, i figured why not make one more heh.

so my question in general is how you all feel about carmax as far as buying a car from them.

i'm currently looking for an infiniti g37s in manual. i just got back from an infiniti dealership. my price range i'm looking is like between 25k - 28k, and i'm primarily looking at 2008 since that is all that can fit into my budget.

well the dealership i went to sold the last 2008 they had, on saturday. i noticed it wasnt on their website today and WAS yesterday, so i went to check and see. needless to say, they got me in a 2010 g37s that was freaking sweet, but it's out of my range at $36k so i'm not going to buy it.

but while there, they kept telling me how the g37's they did have used were all brought to infiniti dealerships for maintenance, and still had the warranties. and that when good infiniti's show up at auctions, they try to snag them up.

so my question is, how are the quality of the cars at carmax?

there are 2 g37's i want to check out at a carmax near me, but i am just curious, other than carfax, how i can find out how they were maintained (if at all possible). i know this could just be dealership talk, trying to get me to buy from them, telling me what i want to hear, but is carmax pretty good about this as well?

additionally, their 'no haggle price' ... is that firm and set in stone? like is it even worth it to try and haggle?

ive never bought from a dealership, carmax or any official dealership, so all this is new to me.

also if you have purchased from them i'm just looking at your overall experience. i also may be interested in trading my car in to them as well, if they give me a decent offer for it.

in my experience, autocheck found more stuff than carfax did.

iirc, they've also got a money back guarantee, so have the car checked over

check the seat pockets. when i was in the market a few years ago i looked at a jeep there. they had updated the sticker price from $16K to $17K but left the old sticker in the driver's seat pocket in the back seat.

Should be easy to find a previous rental car shopping through them.

No way I'd buy a car from them.

sorry but a 2008 g37s with 14k and 18k miles on it doesn't scream "rental" to me.

and not sure bout the avatar comment either, i have em disabled. thought i had a fish avatar though.

I bought my Mustang GT 'vert there in 2006. The experience was good and took just over an hour. I found the car online, went to the store it was located at, drove it, sat down with the salesman and told him what I would pay and that I wanted brand new tires on it (my brand). He wrote the sales order which included my terms. I wrote a check. He called my bank and verified I had the funds. I signed the sales order and title transfer paperwork. That was it. Title came in the mail a few days later.

There was basically no negotiation. I offered 2K less than they had the car listed at and they accepted it no questions asked. My offer was based on KBB for that car in excellent condition at a dealer for that year (2004). They knew they were over priced and didn't try to haggle at all. Looking back I wonder if I could have offered $3K off.

Anyway, overall good experience, I'd buy there again.

Edit: Forgot to mention, they ordered the tires through their parts department and gave me a receipt. About a week later they called when the tires arrived, I drove the car down and they installed them, took about 30 minutes.

Wow, Im amazed they took less for the car than what it was priced at. I thought they had a zero negotiation policy.

You're going to be the G3 guy from all the haters getting pissed you are asking so many questions! 🙂

CarMax is decent, however; know they will commonly repaint the bumpers, hoods and mirror surrounds to 'shave' mileage off the car. This isn't bad in reality, but my problem is many times they didn't put all the fasteners / screws properly back in place. At least in my experience, they have taken off the bumpers to paint them rather than getting overspray everywhere.

They are excellent when you have a common car and just looking to trade it in for cash without dealing with the hassle of selling it.

I have known a few that 'graduated' out of their hondas and toyotas...they didn't really get too raped on the deal, except you do lose the trade-in potential that can shave off sales tax. They all got much more though from CarMax than the dealerships they were buying cars from were willing to give them for their trades.

CarMax will not take cars with suspension or brake mods though. They are pretty picky.

Zero Negotiation policies are like those that put 'No Solicitation' signs on their doors. Salesmen know it's a win-win situation.

There are a few zero-negotiation auto dealers, but they are usually selling high end/classic vehicles and are looking at appreciation of their inventories each month, rather than depreciation.
