How do you address your in-laws?

My sister-in-law addresses my parents by their first name, but she did not meet my parents until she was 24. I on the otherhand met my soon-to-be in-laws when I was still in high school.

I usually try to avoid addressing them at all and wait to be spoken to. Although on the phone I still address them as Mr. and Mrs., but I almost feel like I'm too old (25) to be addressing them as Mr. and Mrs. (afterall, I don't call anyone Mr. or Mrs. at work and they're just as old as my in-laws).

My mom said she had the same problem and didn't know what to call my dad's parents for the longest time. Just curious what everyone else does.

I forced myself into calling them mom and dad. It was very uncomfortable for everybody at first, but now they know it's to them I'm referring and we don't both have strained looks on our faces.

i avoid it. she never told me what to call her, so i just don't. if she isn't involved, i call her by her first name. it is awkward (married for 17 years)

my parents called their inlaws "mom" and "Dad", just like their spouse. my wife calls my parents mom and dad, but for my mother in law, it isn't like that. i have heard the other in laws call her by her first name, so i guess that is what i am supposed to do. i do call her husband (remarriage, so he is my wifes step dad i guess?) by his first name, but they got married just 5-6 years ago

so i answered "Only speak when spoken to" in the poll , that is close to my avoid it answer

Alright, I though we were talking about brother/sister in laws here.

As for parents my parents call their inlaws mom and dad.

I try to avoid it
Edit: Except her step-parents, I call them by their first names

mom/dad. it's more endearing and also gives the in-laws the feeling that they have been accepted as "secondary parents"

ask them what they'd prefer. Mine said they'd prefer first names, so I occasionally pull out the Mr. & Mrs. to tweak them :)
