How do you add a "new" entry in Linux?

Like when you right click and go "new..." the option option is text document. I want to add Word, Excel etc in there too (well the libre office ones). How do I go about doing that? Distro is Mint 18 if it matters. I presume I need to drop blank documents in a folder somewhere, at least hopefully it's that easy and not something more complicated.

You may be able to assign a custom action to the file manager, but I'm not familiar with Mint. Doesn't seem like that would save much time. Couldn't you just open libreoffice and save the file where you want?

In Mint (Cinnamon at least) it works like this:

(1) Make sure you have a "Templates" folder under your home directory. I believe this will be there by default, but if not you should make it.
(2) Open the program you want to add to the "Create New Document" menu entry. For example, open Calc (LibreOffice)
(3) Save this blank document as some useful file name (for example LibreOffice Calc) in the "Templates" directory.
(4) Now this document will be listed in your "Create New Document" menu entry.

You can also add non-blank documents as templates if you wish.

Cool thanks, the templates folder did indeed work, seen that folder before never really thought much about it.

I find it's faster than opening the program then having to browse to the folder again, when I'm already in the folder.
