How do vegetable crispers work?

Don't quote me on this, but I believe the enclosed drawer prevents the moisture from dissipating as quickly.
 
They are only humidity settings. I don't think anything that goes in the fridge ever comes out crispy, except for that skin that forms on the top of 2 year old yogurt on the second shelf, behind the cottage cheese.
 
I always thought that you put them in their so they wouldn't get "wilty".
