How do upgrade to iOS4 and back up contacts / photos?

Guys, the HD on the PC that I had linked to my iPhone burned down, and I bought an entirely new machine (was due for an upgrade). I wanna upgrade to iOS4, but I think iTunes is gonna try to erase my contacts / pics because it doesn't recognize the PC - is that right? How do I back up my stuff and then get it back after I upgrade, or better yet how do I not erase it to begin with? Also, if I wanna get iPhone 4 or Droid in the future, how do I transfer everything to them?

Wrong. The "problem" the OP fears does not exist.

It is certainly possible to set up another PC to recognize the phone and back up everything without writing over it.

Plug the phone into your computer and when it shows up in iTunes, right click on it, and go to backup. I should work despite not being the same hard drive. If not I'm pretty confident there are 3rd parties apps that will do that can most likely be found with a google search.

On the new PC, backup the phone with the backup option and upgrade. That's all you need to do. If you want to get your apps onto your new computer, use the "transfer purchases" feature.
