(btw they are copies of my family guy season 1 dvd which i want on my hard drive)

i would swithc the mode to iso with dvd decryptor, then you can use a program called daien tools (spelling?), to mount the iso as a virtual drive. Better yet, you can get a program called auto GK, to compress that iso to a divx, then open it like any other movie clip in mdia player or wahtever you use.

What program are you using to play them back with? PowerDVD works fine from my experience. WMP sucks for DVDs whether it be on disk or on hard drive.

PowerDVD can play them. In powerDVD you need to choose, play DVD file from HD and browse to the directory where the files are.

VLC should also be able to play it.

I remember reading something that the rights to DVD Decrypter were bought out by some company who is not releasing it, so anyone offering DVD Decrypter for download is breaking the law like someone offering pirate versions of Windows XP.

I have the last version that was released by the creater(before the shutdown) so I'm legal. And no I'm not breaking DeCSS, I have another program that just ignores it(AnyDVD)

DvD Decrypter, AnyDvD and Daemon Tools + a very large hard drive makes for a nice Media Center. No more Disk Swaping or searching the DvD Rack.

Any freeware legal alternatives? I need to backup to ASF to perform a video conversion for my ipod.

You could try Shirnk DvD. I use it from time to time but I also have CloneDvD which does a better job in my opinion(it costs though)

I should start looking for a new DvD ISO ripper. CloneDvD and even Shirnk DvD can take up to 30 minutes to do a rip(they copy, and re-encode even if the orginal is under 4.5GB)

You have the latest version. It was bought out by Macrovision (Europe) and also the author was taken to court over the software too.

I think they only reason Macrovision bought out DvD Decrypter was because they could not win thier court case. Maybe the RIAA should consider buying out the P2P Networks.

if the riaa bought out the p2p networks which were basically made to distribute illegal stuff wouldn't a new network to distribute illegal stuff pop up?

so in the end that would really be a quite pointless decision

If you like having full dvd features (menus + video) on your hard drive, might I suggest the ratdvd format:
http://www.ratdvd.dk/
It will do that in about 1/4 the space of simply ripping to your hd from the dvd

Well so goes the way of previous P2P programs already.. remember the dude from Napster was taken to court, the site was removed from the web and eventually replaced with a pay site (which pays royalties to the music companies now).
