How do threads get locked?

Nanotech

Senior member
Obviously, I am a n00bie and recently I posted a thread asking about help with newsgroups. Within an hour and before anyone had a chance to respond it was locked.

Why?

Your thread got locked because you were asking how to use them for illegal downloading. Any talk of illegal downloading of movies, programs or music is not allowed here.

its random, a lock fairy comes along and randomly locks threads. when you get 10 threads locked, you can email anandtech for your secret prize!

Nanotech, some of the members here are Moderators (Mods if you will) who have been given the ability to lock threads, edit posts, ban users, etc. They usually don't just do it for fun (though sometimes it appears that way), rather they try and keep Anandtech's legal liability down by not allowing potentially illegal things to be discussed, such as where to get warez, movies etc. They also lock any threads that are a little too "Adult" in nature, have links to porn, are bashing minorities, or whatever might be deemed a little too offensive. They keep things from going too crazy. 🙂 hope that answers your question.

Well alright then! Guess I won't be using newsgroups anytime soon.

all you had to do is ask about newsgroups readers and not mention WHAT you were going to download from them.

A good newsreader is grabit http://www.shemes.com/

Do a search as there are other threads that addressed newsgroups as well, with many recommendations.

Good explanation, the OP should keep in mind however that you are allowed to bash religion, especially Christianity. But at no point in your typing should you attempt to bash minorities or homosexuals.

Lack of Common Sense or the MM (Moron Meter) is in high gear.

Once in a blue moon, both occur at the same time!

hey who has that chklist thing? that was funny..and we can use that now...u knw what i'm talking about?

the one that goes "you are a: []n00b []troll...etc.."

Thanks for the straight answer, I will keep it safer and more legal from here on out. I may even use a little more common sense but don't feel I meet the criteria to show up on the MM.

LOL

Thanks for the laugh and welcome to the AnandTech Forums 🙂

Just to clarify I was just joking about the MM, nothing personal against you.
