How do third party checks work?

My roommate doesn't have his checkbook. he has a wife/kids in Houston and he's doing his residency in Austin. Rent is due today.

He wants to sign me over his paycheck, I write him a check for the difference, and deposit his paycheck into my account? Will this work and will most banks (mine is Washington Mutual) accept it?

The name on the check has to match the name on the account. That's what BofA has always told me.

You might be able to deposit it into your account if you both go down to the bank. Most likely, you would need to go inside, show both IDs, etc.
