how do they find their nuts?!

when squirrels bury their nuts, how do they remember where they buried them later on?

i think i heard or read somewhere that they just bury them randomly and forget. then afterwards, they just dig in random places and find nuts purely by chance. i also heard that squirrels won't eat anything unless it has just been undug by them.

is any of this stuff true? i'd hate to be talking out of my ass and not know it.

Nah... squirrels eat berries too. Squirrels can forget where they bury nuts, but the worst thing that happens is the nut sprouting. I doubt squirrels dig at random and find nuts to eat...

I think a study showed that squirrels dig up about 10% of the nuts they buried. That means that they do not remember where they buried them all.

However, I don't know how they find them. Squirrels around here just seem to dig randomly, but I may be wrong. Maybe they can smell them or sense them in some other manner.

I've read that they don't remember where they bury either. The digging is random and eventually they find something. Maybe they can smell a nut underneath the dirt.

They're pretty smart sometimes. Have you ever seen one defeat a squirrel-proof bird feeder. It's quite amazing.

All that means is that humans who make the so-called squirrel-proof bird feeder (like the one at my mom's work that has two frequent squirrel visitors) are dumb.
