How do *they* burn CDs/DVDs?

Audio cds were back around the eighties. Data CDs were in the late eighties. But there were no consumer CD-RW drivers nor media. My question: how do the major corporations put games/audio/documents on CDs? and where do they get the media? I also want to know how they first started writing to DVDs, which came about 15 years after CDs.
