How do they add color to older movies?

I noticed on the credits for the ABC James Bond movie this evening they credit some company for adding the color. Does this mean that the film was originally black and white and they added color? If so, how? And if not, what does it mean this company was responsible for the color?

colorization

BTW, the extras on O Brother Where Art Thou discuss a new methodology that was first used on that film. Pretty kewl.

Otherwise, what Ted Turner has done to all of those older films is a dman travesty. I sure hope he spends some time in some sort of afterlife hell for that.

If the movie isn't originally shot in black in white, that company would probably be the company that did the color timing.

In basic terms, it's who makes the movie look pretty. 🙂

Most movies look very different when they are originally shot.

Yeah...sometimes a certain mood is desired for either an entire film or maybe just one scene so the film can be altered accordingly (re: my mentioning of the O Brother extras).
