How do the ratings work? Why would anyone want to rate me? Why bother with all this ratings malarky? Does it serve a meaningful purpose?

View someone's profile, and if they have ratings enabled you can rate them. You can only rate someone once.

Why would anyone want to rate me?
They might like what you posted or they might hate it. Or, asking about ratings usually attracts people to rate the poster.

No idea.

Does it serve a meaningful purpose?
None whatsoever. Many people don't even know if 1 is the highest, or 10. (By the way, it's 10.)
 
Personally I don't get why we have them either because you can't change it, and some people just go around giving others 1 and such.

I don't enable mine, because I find it to be rather worthless.
 
People asked for it, doesn't appear to have been too difficult to implement, and doesn't appear to put a burden on the servers, that's why.
