How do the P4 Celerons do at SETI?

They're not great, but they're not bad either.

I had a 1.8 Celeron in a Dell machine that averaged about 5:40 per WU for the two weeks that I had the box.

that 1ghz PIII in your laptop has 512Kb L2 cache
Compared with 128 KB for the P4 Celeron. Seti loves a big cache. 🙂

5:40 isn't bad at all considering I can put together a 1.7 GHz Celeron for less than a hundred bucks with odd parts I already have laying around... I get about 6:05 with my old 1100 Thunderbird.

Well, you could also get a 100/400FSB Northwood w/ 512KB cache for around that or less.

I have a 1.6 that easily does 2133 default, 2400 with extra voltage that I could get rid of for around $80 or so, I'm not using it.

Puts out 3hr WU's 🙂

P4 Celerons suck at SETI 🙁

A cpu that needs loads of memory bandwidth & a big cache ,gets neither with the Celeron version😛 ...well ok you can bump the FSB a load🙂

I could put together a Duron rig for less money & get faster WU times ,a 1.2GHz Duron on a 133FSB (yeah its needs unlocking) will do WUs in about 4.75hrs with DDR RAM.............of course you don't then have the option of plugging a P4 in but the Athlon XP isn't bad either😉

I had a bunch of P4 1.7GHz Celerons going at work for a weekend and each was crunching WUs in rough 6.5 hours per; mind you, these are Compaq Evo units, so absolutely ZERO options for tweaking the FSB or anything. 🙁 Pretty solid though - only one failed fan out of 110 units in the past six months. 🙂

Yep, I know... 😉

My concern is that this is going in a micro atx case with a 200 watt PS and one intake fan. Cooling is a consideration. Don't get me wrong... I love AMD and I have four AMD systems crunching for me now. But they all run hot and every one of them is in an extra spacious case with at least four fans in each.

oh that's true there is a big cache difference... that there is

if you build it the WU's will come 😉,

I'd think with the right memory and chipset you should get <5:45 on it, my 933 P3 gets just over 6hr WU's
(pardon the IPC pun) but shouldn't more(nearly double) mhz on a p4 celery be faster than that?
