How does it allow for constant stopping and starting of recording? Do you have to close the disk for it to be readable in a regular DVD player?

Yes, you do. And Sony also saw fit to introduce firmware glitches that cause them to require servicing if you use a non-Sony disc. I know because I had to support two of them for a VERY short, 3-month service life. Essentially what happens is you stop recording on a disc, the camera locks up indefinitely because it can't deal with the non-Sony media. You can't open the disc door because the camera is working. All manners of power-cutting and turning off are no help, as the camera resumes it's previous task on it's new boot. There is no way to open it manually without breaking the damn thing (which is exactly what Sony does to open them up, and then yell at you for using unofficial media and killing your warranty for it).
