How do subwoofers get connected?

We're having carpet laid this week and I want to lay some wire under the carpet because we plan on hooking up surround sound soon. I just haven't had the time to look into sound systems yet. I've never had a real subwoofer before. Do subwoofers connect via regular speaker wire?

There are subs with pass throughs for speaker wire, then they just steal the low end. Most will use a subwoofer/rca connection

Subwoofers use cable. Doesn't matter what kind of connection (unless the sub doesn't use 5-way binding posts), but any low gauge copper wire is good enough.

Depends. If it's got a plate amp on it, you just need an RCA cable(pending on the sub). If not some heavy duty speaker wire.
