How do Southerners view Lincoln?

Yea Sherman is pretty controversial. But his goal was to end the war as fast as possible, and burning a trail of destruction through the south certainly helped. I remember watching a documentary about Sherman and the southerners were using some form of landmines and he viewed it as dishonorable. So he marched Southern prisoners in front of the army, soon after the landmines were not used anymore.

Lincoln was extremely divisive at the time, but obviously one of the most revered looking back.

I really enjoy his logs, that's what I remember him most for.

Lincoln wanted to send the blacks back to Africa, but it would have cost too much. In my opinion Lincoln wasn't a great president, but there have been much worse ones: Ford, Carter, Obama to name a few. Three of the better recent presidents we have had is Clinton, Regan and G Bush Sr.

I am from the South, and well, historically, I certainly don't feel any bitterness towards Sherman or any other yankee aggressors. Then again, I'm not from Georgia.

A buddy of mine, a native Iowan whose Great great grandfather was a corporal in Sherman's army, and whom wrote letters to his wife throughout the war, and she wrote back--those letters being preserved by the family and not too long ago edited and published by my buddy and has since become a relatively well-received historical document in academia--was visiting Georgia doing research for a documentary film based on his ancestor's letters.

Well, the kindly Georgian took my buddy through this particular battlefield, all regaled in confederate attire and spun many a great yearn about the glorious battles fought, and the tyranny of one Mr William Tecumseh Sherman. It was after the tour, that my buddy made his confession: "I feel that I should tell you, my ancestor fought in Sherman's army..."

Well, it was a matter of moments that the native Georgian's face turned fire red, the sweat beading on his brow, the rage barely contained within clenched fists. Needless to say, my pal high-tailed it out of there post-haste.

likely, but probably not so quickly. bear in mind that the GDP of, I believe, VA, SC, and GA were individually larger than the entire northern states combined prior to the war. (yes, it certainly helps when cost of labor = $0). Slaves were also the most valuable commodity in the entire country at the time. There were horrible. evil, wicked things going on in these plantations, but to think that a plantation owner didn't have a reason to protect their property, their very expensive investment, is a bit naive.

The fear of completely decimating the greatest economy of the country was a very real one. This doesn't condone slavery of course; it's just important to bear in mind the consequences of suddenly turning the wealthiest part of the country into a third world state over night. And yes, people will, to this day, go to war over this kind of pressure.

People tend to hate you when you use a scorched earth policy against against civilian women and children. Steal all the food, rape the women, burn the fields and then leave them to starve over the winter.

well, that's been happening for 1000's of years, and continues today. the more civilized west stopped the practice in the 20th century.

Lincoln only created the emancipation proclamation to screw the south out of money. The south was a big exporter of cotton to the English and by passing the emancipation proclamation, he forced the English to buy cotton from the Egyptians. It wasn't meant to free slaves. Lincoln was a utilitarian and only went for an abolitionist path because most Americans were against slavery. His personal feelings towards blacks were indifferent.
