The Cortex A8 used in the iPhone 3GS is spec'd at 833 MHz (downclocked to 600), and is based on a 65nm Architecture with 256K L2 Cache. Based on the simple specs, it doesn't seem to be much different from a 500-1GHz Pentium 3 from ~2000. Is the performance of the two similar?

Also, how do current smartphone GPUs compare to desktop variants? Is a PowerVR SGX 535 similar to something like a TNT?

Well it's kind of hard to compare them without benchmarks that run on both types of machines to compare numbers cus these new processors are much more efficient clock for clock compared to what we had back then.

Performance of the Cortex A8 is about on par with Atom clock for clock.
Current smart phone gpus are at least on par with the lower tier of desktop IGPs.
