How do single people live and have a decent life on what they make?

I don't know what the economy is like in your neck of the woods but around here i don't see how a single person can live and make ends meet making what most jobs pay in my area. Perhaps I am just not in the know, but most jobs in my area pay less than $30,000.00 and most in my imeadiate area pay less than $15,000.00. It is hard to find a job at all in my area, let alone one that pays good.

What is it like in your area? Are you single, or do you know single people that make ends meet on one salary?

Thanks.

.... Well, they don't work at convenience stores and Wal Mart, and that's apparently where you got your pay figures.

You can't survive on $30,000 a year? Someone needs to teach you money management.

I could live like a king here in SE Michigan on $30K.

Oh, and my dad makes $44k and supports 1 terminally ill wife and 4 kids of varying ages from 18 to 6. Turns out that it actually costs slightly more than that, though.

$30k should be a LOT for a single person to live on.

Most jobs pay less than $30,000.00 in my area. Some $30,000.000 is at the upper level. Most jobs in the city (Richmond) pay about 15-18,000 a few pay in the low 20's. In my imeadiate area most jobs pay about $9,000.00 that is below poverty and last time there was a census the county I live in had 70% of the people lived below poverty and on government assistance.

You live in West Virginia? That's the only place on earth that I can think of fitting that economic profile. And I can tell you this: MOVE.

I have some education, but was never good at math. So I took the technical writing route. I still need to finish my degree though. I need about 4 or 5 classes. I would have thought that some college wold have gotten me in the door somewere, but it looks like it doesn't. Plus I think that there are so many people out there with better qualifications that i am being left behind. I wish i was good at math and could have gotten a degree in the sciences since science fascinates me. i used to spend hours at school just researching stuff that I was interested in.

Without a woman your effective income inreases anywhere from double to quadruple.

What do you mean. Most of the time if you have a wife or SO they would be working and bringing in income for the household. So I was under the impression that if only one person works then you don't have the additional income.

Perhaps my sarcasum meter is broken or something?

my ex just left and im in about the same position as i was when we were together

once i get caught up on a couple of things ill probably be doing better, while keeping our 2 kids. this is on about 24k/year for myself, as opposed to almost 40k/yr together.

dual income puts us over the $100k mark so it's not bad... we live comfortably (for a relatively young couple) despite the high cost of living around here.

apparantly, you've never had a serious relationship before.

No I have never had a serious relationship where people live together and work to make life better for each other. It is something I would like to have in the future, but I have yet to experience it. i know the quality of the individuals (woman and myself) has a lot to do with how much effert there will be to pull things together.

Yeah I would like to find a room mate, but I have trust issues and don't think that it would be a good thing. I have gotten screwed over to many times in the past. I know I need to do something different in the near future though. I can't afford to live alone much longer.

It is all relative, Salarys are pretty damn high over here in Northern VA / DC area but then again so is the cost of living. For example in my area an avg salary is 45 - 65 but a 2000 sq foot townhouse is also $500-$550, so you need a double income just to live comfortably.

you know its funny befor eI bought my townhouse I went to Reston which is the richer area, and they were looking for around 800,000-900,000 for the same 2000 sq foot townhouse...

I had much more disposable income when I was single and I was paid peanuts compared what I make now 🙁 .... Fvcking responsibilites

move to a place with a lower cost of living
job growth is pretty good in kansas city and cost of living is ok
