How do radar guns work?

Dear Straight Dope:

How does a radar gun work? It seems crazy to me that a cop can just point a funny-looking laser gun at my car and magically tell how fast I'm going! How do I know he's not reading the car behind or next to me? --Laura K., Texas

I was once a testament against #2. I told him there was no way my POS rust-ball could be going that fast. No dice 🙂

Question is couldi t?
My old Chevy would start to shake it's self at apart at 70 so I wouldn't even try going faster then 60. Speed limit is 55. It would annoy the frack out of me when a freaking sports car would be going slower then me. God damn
