How do presale tickets work?

I just purchased some tickets via presale, but how exactly does it work? When the tickets go on sale public do they offer seats there where not available through presale? Or does presale have first crack at everything in the venue.
 
I think it is cheaper when you buy it earlier and also you get priority on for the best seats in the house (and the most expensive).

When it goes public, it is usually cheap seats that didn't sell during the presale.
 
Presale usually just gives certain people the first chance to buy tickets before it goes on sale to the general public. Typically it is ALL seats.
