How do people pull off a 3.9 GPA with very little studying?

Around the forums and in life, there are plenty of people who take hard courses, study only an hour max per day, and get like a 3.9 GPA. I don't understand it because I'm over here working my a*s off everyday of the school week to get a 3.7 or 3.8.

Just think of the bell curve. :D

I've got a 3.73 (University of Washington) and I rarely study or work hard, but some of you would argue that my classes aren't "hard," (I'm an English major), so I don't really fit your definition. Most of my friends taking similar courses work their asses off only to get a slightly lower GPA...

I've been that way when it comes to just about anything my whole life, though. I've yet to feel challenged in anything I've taken, coursewise, whether it was Psychology, Oceanography, English, or Philosophy (I've taken classes from each, and 4.0'd most of them).

Yeah, you believe what everyone says about themselves on forums.

I would go into detail explaining to you how people do it, but I have my wife, girlfriend and her sister waiting for me in the hot tub

I know of a complete pothead who has a 3.9 right now...but i think it's b/c he has an easy major: labor studies. I don't know much about it...but I think it's pretty easy. I mean...the guy's a POTHEAD!!! Blah, some people have it way too easy.

Maybe it's 'cause those people can retain information more easily. So if they sit in class and listen to the lectures or just read the text book once they can learn it pretty quick. People are different. YOu have to accept it. I knew a guy who would play video games all night before a calculus or physics test and he'd ace it. He was naturally good at sciences.

i graduated with a 3.52, and i use to smoke up and go out everyday and drink, i just knew when i needed to study, and when i was able to party. I was a dual major with MIS and Business. Have to have a 3.1 to get into the business school where I went too school at too so its hard!

gopunk,

What "easy major/classes" have you taken from the UW? I'd really be interested to hear. :D

I'm tired of everyone generalizing that liberal arts degrees are easy to four-point, especially by people who haven't taken those classes. I wouldn't say a damned thing about being an EE/CS/whatever major, because I haven't taken those classes.

There are a number of idiots who get liberal arts degrees, I agree, but the same can be said for just about any major.

Maybe I'm just getting a bit defensive. I'm tired of the snobbery around here. :D

that's it.. it's easy to say the liberal arts stuff is easy.. but everything is easy for someone.. a lot of people who are doing well in sciences would struggle more in liberal arts. in theory, most people are studying the things they're best at, or at least most interested in, in college..

I expect more what it is is people who come in with no AP credits so they're taking a full load of 100 level classes and maybe coasting compared to your 200-300-400's..

What does a Liberal Arts major study anyways...?

History
African American Studies
Middle eastern studies
Philosophy
Music....

Need I go on?

Nothing wrong with it. In fact liberal arts classes were my and most peoples favorite classes because they were fun. (also help to boost GPA w/o studying).

Side note: the CEO of HP is a midddle eastern studies major:)

They study liberal arts. It's like taking nothing but gen eds for your major. For people who have even less direction in life than business majors.
