How do people make the "motion" internet ads?

Like the ones on yahoo.com's homepage, upper right corner? What programming language is that? Or is it purely an application like macromedia?

Macromedia Flash, ActionScript.

You could do the same with a Java applet, and probably more.

Right click to determine which you are viewing. There are some
other less popular browser plugins which aim for the same thing.
