How do people get no (or low) child support payments?!

How the hell does child support work? On one hand, I hear of women who dont get a DIME from the father, and the father is out on the street and not in jail. Then I hear of stories of some middle class guy tryin to get by whos getting just absolutely RAPED by child support. Then theres the cases where someone whos middle class pays very little, apparently by spending what should have been child support money on a really good lawyer.

How the hell does this work? Isnt there any set standards for child support? Why is it a peice of crap gets off scott free, a hard working guy gets screwed and someone who gets a second mortgage for the attorney can get by with reasonable payments?

I don't know about where you are, but, in many states now as long as both parties are working, in relatively close proximaty of each other and there are no circumstances preventing one parent from being with the children, there is no "child support". Each party has the children for a week/2 week/monthly period and then they go to the other parent. This is becoming a pretty frequent ruling in the past 2 years.

How so? I'm just curious why some people get away paying nothing and some and damn near crushed by the payments.

My uncle's psycho b[/b]itch wife got the kids when they divorced. I have no idea whether or not he got raped on the child support payments as it's not my business to ask, but he didn't deserve to pay any. She did well enough to not need any payments. However, his kids get part of his SSI check.

It's quite sad, she got the kids [who are a bit special] to hate my uncle for no good reason. :(

When I first went to court I wasn't working, I was a stay at home dad who cared for his daughter. My wife worked, and had for a couple years, that's where our income came from.

Unfortunately this is washington, where boobs=might in divorce court, and america where money=lawyer=win in any court.

So she got custody, despite documented criminal charges, documented alcohol abuse, documented infidelity, and the fact that I'm the one that filed for divorce. The judge awarded $234 a month in child support that I had to pay (despite having no job), plus required me to maintain all medical insurance and costs, plus pay 50% of all additional child costs such as daycare so my ex could work...instead of letting me provide day care as I had been for years. Welcome to our legal system.

I immediately got a job, and filed to change the child support amount. I was making $7 an hour, 32 hours a week, and no insurance was offered. The court ruled it was my own fault if I didn't make more, the child support would remain unchanged (though they gave me 3 months reduction to $25 a month to allow me to pay off my legal bills), and told me I had to seek out insurance on my own and obtain it for my daughter. This was despite my ex making 3000 a month at her job, and living with the father of her new child who also made close to 3000 a month...when both of them had medical insurance through their work.

It was only this last year when I finally convinced my ex to sign the request for child support modification that they agreed to reduce it so long as I was unemployed while attending school.

The bottom line is that there is absolutely no logic, no reason, no justice in the American legal system. It's a joke, a farce, an excuse for lawyers and judges and politicians to play god and get rich. That's 100% all it is anymore.

Here in MI our child support laws suck. Luckily my ex and I didnt go through the court. I just buy the boy everything he needs and she leaves it at that. I did see a lawyer once to see if I could get a better deal. Basically I would have ended up still having to pay for everything, plus give her a little over $300 a month, best case scenario.

There is a formula they use, and it is definately flawed.
