How do monitors typically "die"?

I've got a 17" crt that is about 7 years old. Over time it's gotten darker and darker. It still functions to read the internet and do basic apps (games are too dark). Is there something I can do or is it simply near the end of it's life? Naturally I've cranked up the brightness and contrast.

The phosphors (screen coating) can get a bit burnt out, and (within practicality) there's nothing you can do about that. Darkening on CRTs over time is very common, especially after 7 years. LCDs also darken due to loss of backlight strength over time.

You could try increasing the brightness through the driver as well but as you've already guessed, it appears your monitor is nearing the end of its useful lifespan.

don't mean to hijack the thread but my 19" Widescreen LCD is making very. very faint crackles and pops and the screen dims for a short period of time during the crackles and pops.

I'm assuming this is bad but please tell me I'm wrong. I have only had it since like Jan.

crackles and pops? HAHAHAHAHA!!! Don't tell your neighbors you hear sounds from your monitor. lol

(kidding around)

Ok just to confirm this urban legend....

Cracks and popples from your monitor is NOT a good thing contrary to popular belief. ...He was only 4 months old 🙁 So young, so young.

So yeh now I gotta get a new one
