How do manufacturer rebates for cars work?

So I am going to get a new Ford Ranger 2 door extended cab with a 3.0L engine and power equipment group for $15315.72 after $2500 rebate plus tax and tags (no other fees). My question is how do I get the rebate? Does the dealership give me a form to fill out and I send it to Ford? Or will they take off the $2500 and sell it to me for the price above? Is it possible for them to hide a phrase in the contract that says that the dealer retains the rebate and if so what should I look out for?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

First, the manufacturer overprices a vehicle, then, when they see it's not selling, the offer a rebate

EDIT...seriously, you have to watch out for that "dealer retains rebate" in any contract you sign. Make sure you know the exact cost of the vehicle, out of pocket, before signing anything. Also, Finance departments LOVE to fvck with your mind...ever heard this question, "So what monthy payment are you comfortable with??" dicks
