A pc-user I am going to check out this girl's 12inch iBook, which has a G3 processor. She doesn't know the processor speed or much about it, except that the battery is dead.

Here's what she's told me this iBook has:

- 128 MB built in memory (expandable)
- 12 in screen
- programs: Appleworks (like all of Microsoft Office in one program), iTunes, iMovie, Quicktime, Learnlink, Internet Explorer, and more
- Mac OS 9.2.2 installed, disk for OS X included (all you would have to do is install it)
- dual USB
- AirPort card (for wireless capability; works with PC wireless systems)
- CD ROM/DVD player (but no CDRW capability)
- almost all new hardware installed on 1/04 (I have proof of the repairs)
- I don't know much about computers, so I don't really know what kind of processor it has, but here is what it says it has: "PowerPC G3 processor; 256 KB integrated level 2 cache"... whatever that means
- the only bad thing is that the battery is dead because it is old, so you would need to buy a new one

When I get to her house, where can I go on the iBook to check the system's specs?

Also, can someone give me a link to a cheap, but NEW iBook battery? I think they're pretty expensive.

I'm buying it off her for $250. This is a good deal, yea?

Apple Menu, About This Mac. Will give you the specs.

Yes, that's a good deal. Not sure on how to obtain a new battery.

If it's a G3 it is probably running a version of OS 9.x. "About this Macintosh" will only give you open applications and RAM size. You want an application called "Apple System Profiler." It's similar to the "System Information" on Windows.

If you're looking in OSX, I have no idea.

Alternatively you can flip over the computer, locate the Apple part number - it starts with 'M' and then look that up on the web.

$250 is a great deal, I'd go for it.

You can probably buy a new battery for $99 - $129.

Ya, she's giving me OS X cds, too. I'll check out the system specs somehow. Thanks for the tip.

Yea, I'm going for it. I talked her down from $300.

Mainly, I just need this to complement a portable aspect that I've been wanting. My 2600XP system is fine, but having some sort of portable to do things will be nice. Add it to my new iPod and I'll be fine for some time. No college student can afford a G5 anyway.
