HOW TO: Obtain Remote Assistance by Sending an E-mail Message >>
That's the remote assistance information, he wants to know about Remote Desktop, two different things.
hpkeeper, no the computer you connect from does not have to have XP on it. Just put your XP CD in the drive of the computer you want to connect with, when it autoplays, select "Perform Additional Tasks" and then select "Set up remote desktop connection." That will install the remote desktop client on the computer you want to connect from. The client will be under Start>Programs>Accessories>Communications after it installs.
On your XP machine (it must be Pro), right click on My Computer, then select the Remote tab, and enable remote desktop. You can then add users to it. If it is just you logging in, don't add any, and just use your username and password when logging in. Then to connect, just run the Remote Desktop Connection app on the client computer, and input your XP machine's IP. There are other options to fool around with in that app, so tweak those if you want. When it connects, it will bring up a log on, and just input your username and password, and you are good to go.
Remember, if your XP machine is behind a router, you must open port 3389 for remote desktop to work. Also, if using the XP firewall, make sure to set it up to allow remote desktop connections. If using another firewall, you have to do that as well.
