How do I use Remote Desktop within my home network

I have a cable modem connected to a D-link wireless router hard wired to my desktop and wireless to my desktop.

How do I remote desktop from my laptop to my desktop when both computers have the same IP address. When I type in the IP address in I get the standard error. I used http://www.whatismyip.com/ to find the IP address. I also tried typing in the computer name but that didn't work either.

I'm obviously new at this.

thats giving you the external ip. you use the internal ip's which should be like 192.168.0.2 & 192.168.0.3

the 0.2 could be different. type ipconfig at a dos prompt on each machine to get the ip's

If you try to connect from the inside. I.e. through the LAN you should use each computer?s private IP.

If you try to connect from the outside take a look at this page, it describes a specific Remote program, but the principle can apply to other applications: Ultr@VNC - Installation, and Settings

P.S. You can not connect from inside your LAN throught the Internet out, and back inside to your LAN, the Router will not let you do it.

I tried 192.168.0.100 like in ipconfig but it still didn't work.

Do I need to configure windows firewall or the router?

I have TCP 3389 and 80 open on windows firewall and I have public/private port 3389 enabled for 192.168.0.100 in the virtual server portion of the router setup. Whatever that means, I just read somewhere to do that

no, goto a dos prompt . hit start, run, and type cmd and hit enter
then type ipconfig and it will list your computers ip('s)they will start with 192.168.

each system will have a different last number

Ya, that's where I got 192.168.0.100 for my desktop and 192.168.0.101 for my laptop.

I've been through those articles, but I'll read them again and see if I can't get this fixed.

Well, I'm not having any luck after re-reading the articles. I"m probably missing something small. I guess remote desktopping isn't for me.

Try using their names, ie... Freds_Laptop or Freds_Desktop instead of the IP address.

is terminal services turned on? Are you allowing RDP connections to the computer? are you required to log on to the computer with a password?

It sounds to me like RDP isn't enabled or you have a firewall running blocking access.

Otherwise you should be albe to access it via private IP or computer name.
