I've been seeing a lot of people writing about doing this to their drives. what better purpose does this serve? And how do I do it without messing up my drives? Thanks to all who can help me out.

go to correct website,

download software for update,

read instructions provided by the manufacturer,

follow instructions carefully, flash the sucker, and reboot,

you should be done.

it is much the same as any firmware update (like when you update your bios), you got to be carefull, don't touch anything at all until the update is finished.

I have flashed burners and modems and bios's, never had a problem, NEVER. knock on wood.

1) Anytime you try to upgrade the firmware you are taking chances.

2) Updated firmware can sometimes fix problems, make it faster, more compatible.

Depending on your actual brand drive you have, if it's not broken, don't break it 🙂

I have upgraded the firmware on my Iomega CD, it was very simple. One thing to keep in mind IF you upgrade, make sure you do not loose AC power to the PC while it updates, this WILL kill anything you may be upgrading (I use a battery back-up).

Check the web site on the maker of your CD-RW, see IF they have an update and read what it actually "fixes."
