Hello, I've done some research to correct this prob with no avail here's the problem:

I accidentilly installed some compatibility mode drivers when trying to get an old DOS game to work. The problem: I can no longer use my CD Drive in Windows 95 (won't even show in Explorer). There are conflicts with the primary and secondary IDE controllers and the following appears in the System -> performance tab:

Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance.
Drive X: using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.

I've tried removing the IDE controller as well as some registry deletions of 'NOIDE' keys as suggested by the MS site. when re-booting I got the Blue screen saying a conflict with ide controllers (some compatibility and some not) thus it will change them to the way they were the last successful boot. On the next boot, the changes I made were un done.

any suggestions?? Thank you for your time,

Jon

Bump...

Narrowed the problem to the following Devices in the bootlog:

LoadFailed = ndis2sup.vxd
LoadFailed = vshare
LoadFailed = EBIOS
DEVICEINITFAILED = VGARTD
Init Failure esdi_506.pdr
INITCOMPLETEFAILED = SDVXD

I've tried re-installing esdi_506.pdr (the most likely canidate as per MS)

any suggestions?

There may be a better way, but the only way that I've gotten out of compatibility mode is to re-install windows over top of it's self. Good luck!

try updating in device manager the three "machine" system devices (AGP-CPU PCI-CPU PCI-ISA
[you may have PCI- PCI]) by pointing to Via 4 in 1 inf folder/Win95 subfolder for each three
then do busmaster if necessary (Win 9X folder)

you apparently have an nvidia card and Via chipset

BTW: i have also had this happen when a motherboard IDE controller went bad.

Try removing the entries in your config.sys and autoexec.bat that load the dos drivers.

-all line in the autoexec and config are: 'REM'ed out
-tried updating all devices
-guess it may be looking like an over-install :(

further development... The harddisk controller with the problem claims to be a Dual PCI controller...
but my IDE drives are on-board... but the system won't let my uninstall the PCI-driver and install the busmaster driver... if I uninstall the PCI driver in safe mode... it just re-installs automatically next boot, if I cancel the system hangs

thanks for the ideas... bump for more suggestions

Don't device driver's control hardware? I know the problem is device driver related... I thought my problem could fall into this category...
