How do I turn on my A/C before I get home?

Maybe if the A/C is plugged into the Internet?

Is it even possible to mod it?! *gasp* Possible project!! 😛

Maybe you need to look into creating a Device that uses the technology of Home Power Networking that would allow you to have a plugin box sort of like act like a print server and give whatever device you plug into it an IP. In the very lowest level you could control if the power was on or off to the outlet and thereby turning on or off the device.

Wait, there has to be something like that on the market already. Isn't there a website where you can turn a dude's lamps on and off via the web?

That would be a great suggestion if I got home at the same time everyday
But I don't.
And its not just the A/C.
I'd like my water heater turned on as well.

About 10-15 minutes before I get home, so that everything is ready for me the instant I get back. Hehe.

Hmm....

Buy a digital programmable thermostat. They're usually about $40-$50 at Lowes or Home Depot.

You turn off your water heater when you leave the house? 😕

It's a small little tank that only heats up about 10minutes worth of hot water...

The water heater is not going to work well for yah. If it is electric you want it on all the time and just make sure it is nice and insulated. Gona be cheaper then to reheat the whole tank every day. If it is Gas it's not possible anyway. If you are that energy conscious get a flow through heater, that only warms hot water as you need it.

As far as AC... that should be doable via X10 and web control.

Isn't it cheaper to leave the A/C running all day, maintaining a certain temperature rather than working extra hard to cool down a hot house?

A/C units don't work any harder to cool a hot house. They just run longer. On/Off all day or On for a while after you get home...I'd be willing to bet that it would cost more to run it off and on all day. Or it might be better to let it get a little warmer than you like it when you're not home, say 75 degrees instead of turning it off altogether. That's where a programable thermostat would come in handy.
