I can't have XP polling the CD drive while I'm printing video files to tape.

here's one way which will work with both home & pro (off the top of my head)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE :: SYSTEM :: ControlSet001 :: Services :: Cdrom

Change Autorun to 0.


 
Open the Group Policy Editor (type gpedit.msc in the Run box). Under Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates you will see an entry to Turn Off Autoplay. Double click and enable it.
