On an off note,

does anyone know what port age of empires 2 uses ?

47624 TCP
2300-2400 TCP
2300-2400 UDP

Thanks a bunch... now my router USR 8000a-02 calls port forwarding 'virtual server' and it has a spot for the port.. do I put a separate entry for all those ports?

Not too sure... I'm reading the manual on this page here & it doesn't say anything about being able to enter a range of IP's under the Virtual Server section.
But how would you enter 100 separate entries for ports 2300-2400?

However, it seems you can enter a range of IP's under the Special Applications section, but I'm not sure what you would enter for as the trigger...

Yeah, I'm pretty confused about the trigger thing myself, I think they are really vague about that. I don't understand it.

I tried entering in some of the common applications it has and here is what it does:

battlenet
trigger 6112

incoming ports 6112

dial pad
trigger 7175

incoming ports 51200-51201,51210

msn gaming zone:

trigger

47624

incoming ports
2300-2400,28800-29000

So it looks like maybe the trigger is the TCP, and the incoming ports are the UDP ?

Sounds like that's it...
Interesting way to configure port forwarding... it was real simple on the Linksys :p

Indeed. What I don't udnerstand is why they decided to set up 2 different applications for port forwarding... the virtual server, and the special applications... why would they do that? it's confusing

The Virtual Server seems to be for forwarding incoming traffic for apps like FTP Servers or Web servers that you might have. The Special application is for outgoing... I guess

The BEFSR41 isn't a Firewall it's a router (NATing != Firewall). The BEFSX41 is a Router + Firewall.

Open a command prompt then type "netstat /a > nets.txt" (without quotes) and hit enter. Then fireup AoE2 and connect to a game, return to the command prompt and run "netstat /a > net.txt" compare the two files and whichever ports are used in the second one and not the first are used by AoE2. (Note: If you're using WinXP you can use the /ao switch with netstat to get the Process IDs to see what Process is using which port(s) and compare that to the WinKey + Break (task mgr) PID list).

Winkey+Break brings up System Properties. (I'll let everyone else figure out the right combo. :))

You can look at the basic netstat -a list and see the IP address of the machine the port is open to. Either you already know the IP, or you know a domain name and can look it up with nslookup or just ping it.

Another useful one (2K & XP ... maybe NT) is ctrl+shift+esc = Task Manager.
