How do I transfer files from one computer to another using FTP? There is no special connection between the two computers, but I have full access to both of them.

Install an FTP server on one PC (for *nix I prefer proftpd, it is INCREDIBLY easy to set up, for Windows I seem to remember bulletproof and serv-u being fairly straightforward) then install an ftp client on your client pc (such as cuteFTP for windows, or you could use the command line program ftp for both windows and *nix) then make sure port 21 is open on the server and log in. There should be tutorials available for whichever server you choose.

The ftp client built into winxp has a max file size of 4G, so it is no good for transfering files over that size.

are you sure about this? We transferDVD images all the time, and I haven't had a problem yet. If I'm on windows, I use the built in FTP client, but I'm usually on *nix.

The command-line client looks fine, but IE and the explorer client seem to have problems. IE chops files. The explorer client displays a max file size of 4 GiB. However it works OK -- I just transferred a 10 GB file using it, and the file checks out.

FileZilla server and client are alternatives. That client also has a minor issue with large files -- the file size rolls over to negative values and gives wacky speed results after that.

Transferring Files starts at.

No Network.

Using Floppy

Using Zip Drive

Using Flash Drive

Using USB Hard Drive.

Yes Network

Direct Connect Network.

Using Sync. Programs

and so On and So on.

FTP is a method to serve files and thus result in transfer.

However you have to make a choice, either you just want to do whatever is done by others, regardless of what is the Best method for you.

Or you provide a better description of what you want to do so you can be helped in a More serious way.
