How do I transfer data from desktop to Laptop ?

Hi,

I am travelling & taking my desktop's 500 GB Hard Disk ( with data & OS ) with me. Once I reach my destination I will be buying a Laptop there & want to transfer the data from my desktop's HDD to Laptop's HDD.

Without an access to desktop there, how do I transfer data from my desktop's HDD to Laptop's HDD ?

Thanks

How many GBs of data do you intent to transfer/copy.
Why not upload files to those free file sites and download it from your destination?

The cloud is a good solution, however, it assumes a good, broadband Internet access. Another way is to put the HDD in an external case and, when you have time, directly copy what you need via USB. Another good hardware approach would be to clone your desktop HDD to a small laptop-size external, such as Passport, and take it with you. Same USB connection, and you'll have a 100% backup at the same time.

If your destination will give you broadband Internet access, then the cloud is probably the cheapest solution.

Here you go. $20 with free shipping, and you can continue using the drive as a backup drive.

 Since you're traveling, I like the full enclosure idea better than a dock, which has protection for the drive, or the cloud, which is dependent on the availability and speed of an internet connection.

Wow, many excellent choices. Really appreciate your help.

I have full 500 GB of data & internet connection eventhough broadband 2 mbps. has an upload speed of less than 0.5 mbps, so uploading won't work.

So question is, which one is more reliable.

I clone my HDD almost every other day so I like that idea except I will have to buy a laptop HDD. The question is are all laptop HDD are same physical sizes ?

The reason I am asking that is because new 500 GB Desktop HDD are now thinner than older ones.

Are you expecting to clone your desktop's HDD to a laptop drive and use that as a boot drive? That almost certainly won't work. I think what we're all suggesting is that you take your desktop drive with you as an external.

To directly answer your question, no not all 2.5" drives are the same thickness. However, you will be fine if you stick to lines like the WD Scorpio and Seagate Momentus.
